The history of Georgia began with the rise of the early Georgian states of Colchis and Iberia, which c. 1000 BC formed the Georgian civilization and achieved its renaissance and golden age in the twelfth through thirteenth centuries. The history of Georgia has been marked by a series of invasions and subjugation by several empires (such as Rome, Persia, the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire).
